When a women learns that she is about to become a mother, her whole world changes. In nine months or less, she will be bringing a child into the world. The journey will be long and hard, filled with many difficult decisions, surprises, and compromises. However, the moments of joy and anticipation will outweigh all the negatives. Every moment of pain, contraction, morning sickness, wild cravings and mood swings will be erased once her beautiful newborn is placed in her arms. However, there's a long way to go and many things to prepare for. There will be a lot of difficulties. Not having maternity insurance or benefits is one of them.
Although motherhood is a beautiful thing, being an uninsured pregnant woman in Texas isn't. If you are expecting a normal delivery, maternity costs will cost around $8,000. However, if you require a caesarean section or if other complications occur, your maternity costs could be at least $20,000. Do not forget about prenatal checkups. Most insurance companies will tell you that they do offer maternity benefits, but this is false. It's just something some insurance agents say to hook their clients. Since the state of Texas does not mandate maternity for individual policies, most insurance companies do not offer it. This is because health insurance companies in Texas cannot turn a profit on a benefit so specific in nature. If clients request a benefit, it's guaranteed they're going to use it, which is a loss to the insurance companies.
With that being said, there a few options available that fall into a category called a "defined amount" benefit. This basically means that there is a set amount for childbirth. These fees usually fall short of the delivery and do not include prenatal exams that are required before giving birth. Two companies offer this type of benefit. United Healthcare Texas offer two years of coverage that amount to $2,000 that escalates to $6,000 after the policy has been in place for at least five years. Assurant Health offers full coverage for a routine pregnancy after a $5-$10,000 maternity deductible. However Assurant Health has some of the most expensive policies in the Texas Health Insurance market.
Since there are no options for maternity benefits on individual Texas health insurance policies, there a few other options available to soon-to-be mothers. If you are in your early stages, consider a job that offers a good health insurance plan. If you're changing jobs you canĂ½t be denied insurance due to pregnancy. Try using Medicaid or see if you are eligible for COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act). If that doesn't work, seek help through your local Department of Health or seek help through charities.
